Mario and Isabel Fernandes, the owners of Fajã dos Padres, are passionate producers of organic vegetables and tropical fruits, and of course their wonderful Madeira wine made from the Malmsey grape. Isabel’s grandfather started Fajã dos Padres in 1920 with vegetables and the vineyards. Isabel and her husband Mario took over in 1980 and they have been organically certified since 2008.

The oldest Fajã dos Padres’ Madeira wine is from 1986, a real collectors wine. The Madeira wine is not organically certified, because according to Mario, the Fajã dos Padres label is more unique than any organic label could ever convey.

The fruit varieties they grow are: bananas, papayas, mangos, pitangas (Surinam cherries), figs, guavas, passion fruit and avocados. All organic. The vegetables are sold to local restaurants, like Reid’s Palace, and they use them in their own kitchen.

It’s not an easy place to reach: there are a couple of stairs to climb before you reach the elevator, which brings you 250 meters down over a very steep cliff. Or you could just arrive by boat. The perfect hideaway!

The restaurant is open for breakfast at 10 am, lunch and dinner are serveld until 06 pm. If you are used to having your dinner later, no problem, they bring your order to your cottage. We can recommend the fish stew. Most of the ingredients used in the restaurant, like the vegetables and fruit are from their own organic produce. Fresh, healthy and very tasty.
